The Zugspitze peak

Our local mountain is the Zugspitze. The state border between Austria and Germany runs over the west summit of the 2,962 metres high Zugspitze, which is the highest mountain of Germany and name giver of the holiday region of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.

The modern Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car takes you up to the ridge below the summit. Alternatively, you can get up and down from the German side using either the cogwheel train or the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn cable car (Eibseeseilbahn). Once at the top, it's just a short walk to the summit cross, however you should be sure-footed and not be afraid of heights.

The Zugspitze in winter:

South of the summit of the Zugspitze lies the Zugspitzplatt plateau with three glaciers, including the Northern Schneeferner, the Höllentalferner and the Southern Schneeferner, two of which are Germany's largest glaciers.

In winter the Zugspitzplatt serves as a ski area with approx. nine lift facilities.

Birds-eye view from the summit of the Zugspitze

Enjoy the spectacular view of the valley basin, the Eibsee lake (Grainau) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Overviewing the mountains of over four countries, including 2,000 and 3,000 metre peaks as well as the only 4,000ers, is a unique experience.

Hard to believe, but on a clear day you can even see the Großglockner (Hohe Tauern), highest mountain of Austria, the Piz Bernina (CH/Graubünden) and the television tower in Munich (D).
